Iconic Garment

The French Chore Jacket

The chore jacket first emerged in 19th-century France, where it became the everyday uniform of craftsmen, railway workers and farmers. The most recognisable versions were made from durable cotton drill or moleskin — fabrics valued for their strength and longevity.

These jackets were typically dyed in a distinctive deep blue, known as bleu de travail, chosen for its ability to conceal dirt and wear from daily labour. Over time the garment became one of the most iconic pieces of European workwear.

Designed with practicality in mind, the chore jacket features simple button closures and large utility pockets used to carry tools and everyday objects.
